Gels are products that are between the solid state and the liquid state and characterized by significant viscoelastic properties. The gel structure is generally obtained by a cross-linking process. It enables a nearly incompressible compound to be obtained.

They are notably used as thermal insulation in multiple applications. They can be "passive" insulators, meaning gels whose efficiency is associated with their very low thermal conductivity. They can also be "active" energy-restoration insulators.
