Prepare your Metalworking Fluids for summer downtime – and ensure a smooth restart!

Summer breaks can take a toll on your machining operations if not properly anticipated. High temperatures, lack of circulation, no top-ups… your metalworking fluids (MWFs) are exposed to harsh conditions. To avoid unpleasant surprises when production resumes, here are CONDAT’s expert tips to ensure fluid health and maintain top performance.

Before the summer break:

1.   Check coolant concentration: Make sure it’s at the upper limit.
2.   Control the pH level: Stay within the recommended range.
3.   Minimize chlorides: Reduce corrosion risks.
4.   Remove contaminants: Eliminate tramp oils, chips and other residues.

After the break:
1.    Inspect bath condition: Look at appearance, check pH and concentration.
2.    If concentration is too low: Adjust to optimal levels.
3.    If pH is too low: Use a bactericide and a pH booster to stop bacterial growth.*
4.    If both are low: Use a bactericide and increase concentration.

Refill & Maintenance Best Practises:

If you start up with a brand-new emulsion, the best way to prolong the sump life is to do a proper maintenance prior to the filling of the machine!
1.  Use a system cleaner to clean the tank.
2.  Treat with a bactericide to sanitize the machine.
3.  Circulate the emulsion for 48 hours at low concentration, drain, and refill with a fresh emulsion.

CONDAT can provide you with tank-side additives to help you maintain your coolant in good conditions: System cleaner without bactericides, effective biocide and fungicide, pH Boosters, Antifoam agents…
